For months now I have been trying to come up with the perfect way to baby proof our living room. Our living room is dropped down from the rest of the house. The step down is tile, and it is very dangerous for little ones on the go. I actually have nightmares of my kids tripping and falling on it. Any kind of fall would be an immediate trip to the ER. I know that Mason will be crawling soon, and it is very important that I get this taken care of soon. Plus, my nephew is coming to visit in early October, and I need my house safe for him.
I've come up with many ideas of how to "fix" it, but none of them will work. I'm afraid anything I do will create a tripping hazard into the living room. The ultimate fix would be to build the floor up even with the step, but that won't work either. We have four gorgeous window doors that would need to be raised, and if we raised them it would create other projects we'd have to finish.
So, do any of you have a brilliant idea on how to make these steps safer?
There are 3 drop downs total one this size and two smaller.

Misty, please forgive me for sounding unconcerned, but I would think that you could treat it just like stairs with Mason and your nephew and teach them how to go up and down it safely. We worked with Liberty on going up and down stairs as soon as she got mobile and thankfully she hasn't been hurt yet. Has anyone been hurt on the tile stepdown in your house yet? Maybe the pictures don't do it justice. I do understand that primal mommy fear though! I have nightmares about my kids falling off our deck, and there is a permanent baby gate on the stairs and the railing is plenty high.
Lindsey, I totally get teaching them about safety, and going up and down stairs. We've had great luck with that in the past with the other kids. I'm just more concerened with early crawlers and walkers. The slip of a hand while crawling and hitting his head on the marble corner is what worries me. Going up and down the step I think will be fine. I'm just worried about the slips and falls against the corner. It would definitely be cause for stitches, or broken teeth. :(
Ah, now see, I never thought of broken teeth! I see your point now.
I wonder if a carpet installer could install a permanent rug along the step?

I know you are worried about somebody tripping on it, but I say tripping on this (probably while stepping down in to the carped room) is better than a slip and fall on the corner of the marble....you know?
